The Forest Service does a lot of Timber Stand Improvement (TSI) projects in southern Missouri. It's kind of like weeding and thinning a garden. If you want good nice sized carrots, you have to pull the weeds, and thin out some where it's too thick. They do a lot of stuff that make no sense, like burning over 4,600 acres in a single chunk, but the TSI isn't a big issue. The trees cut are like a slow release vitamin, retuning nutrients to the soil over time.
